Why get rid of a stump
A leftover stump is more than an eyesore. It can trip kids and guests, get in the way of the mower and send up new shoots that you have to keep cutting back.
Old stumps can also attract pests as they rot. Grinding them out gives you a cleaner, safer yard and space you can actually use.
How stump grinding works
A stump grinder is a machine with a cutting wheel that chews the stump down into small wood chips. We grind below ground level, deep enough to plant grass or new landscaping over the spot.
We work carefully around the surrounding lawn and plantings to keep disturbance to a minimum.
After the stump is gone
Grinding leaves a pile of wood chips mixed with soil where the stump was. Once the area is leveled with topsoil, you can seed it, sod it or plant something new.
Let us know your plans for the spot when we give your estimate, and we can talk through the best way to leave it.
Stump grinding or stump pulling
Grinding takes care of most stumps. When the roots themselves are the problem, such as roots threatening plumbing, or when the ground has to be fully cleared for construction, stump pulling removes the stump along with its root system.

FAQ
Stump Grinding questions
How deep do you grind the stump?
We grind below ground level, deep enough that you can cover the area with soil and grow grass or plant over it. If you have a specific project planned for the spot, tell us and we will plan around it.
Does grinding remove the roots?
Grinding removes the stump and the top of the main roots. The remaining roots are left in the ground and slowly break down. If the roots need to come out completely, ask us about stump pulling.
Can I plant a new tree where the old stump was?
You can, but it is usually easier to plant a little to one side, where the soil is not full of chips and old roots. Grass and smaller plantings can go right over the ground-out spot once it is topped with soil.
Can you grind an old stump that has been there for years?
Yes. We grind both fresh stumps from recent removals and older stumps that have been sitting in the yard.
Should I grind the stump at the same time as the removal?
Doing both on one visit is usually the simplest option, since our crew and equipment are already there. We can include stump grinding in your tree removal estimate.
